LA SCAPIGLIATA IN CARNELIAN
This remarkable piece was created with carnelian, an amber-hued translucent gemstone, selected because of the traditional reference to Mary as being transparently perfect. Like the image of Jesus in Jasper, it plays on the whimsy of a religious face being so often spotted in rock formations, tree bark and potato chips.
In this artwork, the image resides within the mosaic of carnelian tiles and there is no face visible on either the surface or the back of the piece. When backlit, however, the haunting image of the St. Anne emanates a warm amber glow.
This piece comprises approximately 600 3/8" Carnelian gemstones and measures 9"x12".
